In 2011, the Bayanihan Foundation will partner with several groups to build two libraries in Iligan City, Mindanao, Philippines. The two libraries will be a library for a rural elementary school and a library for the Iligan City Central high school, home to more than 5,000 high school students. Both schools have a large Filipino Muslim and Christian student population. “These libraries will help many students, Muslim and Christian, who deserve a good education. A library will be one big step towards that goal,” Luz Saavedra, one of the community leaders in Iligan spearheading this effort.
The multiple diaspora and homeland partners involved in this effort are:
- Rotary Club of Chicago Far North
- Dr. Vicente and Luz Saavedra and the Rotary Club of Iligan South
- Zakat Foundation of America (to be confirmed)
- individual diaspora donors (George Cruz, others)
- Barbara Alban, Helen Tulen, Mike Saavedra and the members of the Iliganon Association of the Midwest

Barbara Alban, a member of the Iliganon Association of the Midwest, has been actively collecting books for the library. “Books and Iligan City are close to my heart. Reading is of course the fundamental basis of everything,” Barbara said in the November 2010 issue of the Ravenswood School’s newsletter as she helps to collect children’s books for the library.
