In 2019, the Bayanihan foundation plans three exciting projects to promote environmental conservation of whale sharks; help abandoned children; and build a state-of-the-art computer lab for the disabled.
In 2013, Bayanihan Foundation has partnered with with Visayas Mindanao People’s Resource Development Center (VMPRDC) and planted over 30,000 mangrove seedlings in Liloan, Cebu. In 2018, some of the seedlings have matured into mangrove forests protecting fish, wildlife and help local fisher folk community. However, challenges remain and support needs to continue.
On September 2018, NEXTGEN Fellow Camillo Geaga traveled back to the Philippines. He wrote an essay of his personal thoughts of his 2017 trip at the same time reflecting on his recent trip.
The Philippines signed into law the ‘Balik’ (Return) Scientist Program providing incentives to Filipino scientists in US and around the world to return back home and share their expertise. Like Bayanihan Foundation’s NEXTGEN Program, this new program might help reverse ‘brain drain’ and have long-term positive impact.
