Three months after Typhoon Haiyan devastated areas of the Philippines, the communities living in the disaster zone still face daily challenges and are struggling to make their way back to normalcy.

As Valentine’s Day approaches, please let’s express our love for the Philippines, and commit to being part of the healing process.  In the wake of the Typhoon, the Bayanihan Foundation Worldwide distributed approximately 1,000 food packages that fed families of 6, and mobilized collaborative efforts for volunteer medical attention in hardest hit areas in Leyte and Eastern Samar.   Basic relief supplies, such as food and water, medical, and shelter supplies are still in dire need.

This year, the Foundation has a goal of $10,000, to provide basic relief supplies.

Please consider donating during this critical time. With your help, we will be able to enhance the lives of the affected communities in significant ways.

bangonbayan

On January 20, 2014, the Board of the Bayanihan Foundation Worldwide established clear priorities for its work in order to focus its activities and deliver more effectively.

The new priority goals are built on Bayanihan’s continuing work and include:

  • Building immediate relief funding for typhoon-affected areas in Leyte and East Samar; Adopting 1-2 communities to help with long-term recovery support
  • Advocating for Filipino Amerasian children of U.S. military, abandoned in the Philippines
  • Educating and training youth on climate change in northern Cebu
  • Developing NextGenYouth Leadership programs and support
  • Expanding public awareness of the toxic legacy at the Subic and Clark Bases

Please join us.   With your support, we can achieve these priorities, further contribute to positive social changes in the Philippines, and strengthen Foundation capacity.

The Many Faces of America

ameriasian9When the US naval bases in the Philippines closed in 1992, the military left behind thousands of Amerasian children. Since the closings, American presence still exists and -contrary to initial estimate of 52,000 – it is now estimated that there are 250,000 Amerasian children, ranging from newborn to geriatric, abandoned in the Philippines. These Amerasians are acutely vulnerable, particularly to human trafficking, and painfully stigmatized. They live in abject poverty, forcing them to continue the cycle of marginalized sub-existence and prostitution.

How can one be half-American and still not a citizen? The US Senate Judiciary Committee ameriasian2rejected attempts to include the Philippines in the Naturalization Act, “claiming that Filipino Amerasians were not victims of discrimination, that they were conceived from illegal prostitution, and that, unlike Amerasians in South Korea and Vietnam, they were born during peacetime. But none of these are conscionable grounds for selectively preventing Filipino Amerasians from coming to this country.

Amerasian Girl with Filipino MotherAt a time when the issue of immigration reform is before the nation, Amerasians need new leaders in Congress to speak on their behalf. What’s more, the military has recently announced that it will restore a significant presence in the Philippines; last year, over 70 ships stopped at Subic Bay, and over 100 planes stop at Clark Air Base each month. The United States, then, has an opportunity for redemption — to make sure Filipino Amerasians are not left behind by the ship again.” (1)

Rice, Rice, Rice!

Rice Phil children_golden_rice_hunger_poverty_third_world_environment-300x180 food

We love rice! It’s been a staple for the people of the Philippines, dating back to 3200 BC.  Filipinos eat rice at every meal – breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  We steam it, fry it, noodle it.  Our national dance Tinikling is even about working in the rice paddies.

Having rice at the table is just as important to Filipinos as it is for Americans to have bread. The Bayanihan Foundation Worldwide, together with partner organizations, distributed over 1,000 food packages containing rice to Typhoon Haiyan survivors, in communities in Leyte and Samar.
